A 19-year-old was arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that happened in 2023, according to the Brownsville Police Department.

The teenager was arrested Thursday at the 1800 block of E. Tyler St. with help from the US Marshals Service, the FBI, and Border Patrol SRT.

The murder happened on Feb. 20, 2023, when the suspect was 16 years old, according to police. Brownsville police responded to a local apartment complex and found the victim had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said the investigation determined the teenage suspect had fled into Mexico.

The suspect was not identified.

Channel 5 News reached out to the DA’s office and the Brownsville Police Department for additional details of the deadly shooting.

The teenager was transferred to Darell Hester Juvenile Detention Center, according to police. Because he committed the crime as a juvenile, he will be processed as such before being transferred to face trial as an adult.
