BROWNSVILLE – The director of a Brownsville shelter said the facility is back open after renovations.

Victor Maldonado, executive director at Ozanam Center, said the place has been open for more than 20 years.

He said over that time, some of the facilities on the property have been in need of some serious renovations.

Maldonado said the remodeling of the dining hall was made possible by a $75,000 grant.

“We got a grant from the John and Marie Stella Kennedy Foundation. And this grant is to be able to rehab or remodel certain areas of our shelter and the first one that was in dire need of was our dining hall,” he said.

Maldonado said an additional $18,000 grant was provided by the Keppel AmFELS Foundation.

He said other grants in the future will be used to rehab the kitchen, family room and bathrooms.

The shelter also unveiled a new 12-passenger van thanks to another grant.
