BROWNSVILLE – A Brownsville woman is seeking answers after an unknown dark substance keeps spreading through her home.

Carol Watson, 75, says she cleans her home regularly, which was why she was able to spot the substance easily.

Watson says it’s spreading throughout her walls, air-condition ducts and even inside the fridge.

"I am afraid that I am breathing something in the air... I'm worried about something black like charcoal that may settle in my lungs," she says.

Watson says the AC unit is only nine years old and is working fine, but an AC salesman told her there could be issues with the coils inside the unit.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the City of Brownsville to find out what people like Watson can do in these situations.

A city spokeswoman says the city helps residents with reconstruction of their homes, but they don't offer help inspecting AC units.

We also spoke to Marcy Rodriguez of the Community Action Corporation of South Texas Brownsville office.

The corporation helps people with an array of services like weatherizing their homes and even paying utilities.

We put Rodriguez in contact with Watson; she says the organization will try to provide whatever help she qualifies for.
