SANTA ROSA – Illegal activity in isolated areas are forcing Cameron County constables to take a stronger approach to fighting crime in their area.

The area of uncharted land, north of Santa Rosa, is where Fela Metzger fears is a breeding ground for dangerous and filthy activity.

“Tires, mattresses, lumber – you name it they just trash it,” Metzger said.

She said she worries her life may also be at risk.

“I hear gunshots on the levees. One after the other shots, just constantly,” she said.

The isolated areas are where Cameron County Precinct Five Constables Office has focused their efforts.

“Any time we come out here encounter a different dump site, different individuals destroying property,” Sgt. Andrew Gonzalez, with the Cameron County Precinct Five Constables, said.

The precinct five stretches more than 30 miles. The area is one of the largest in the county.

“Patrolling where there is not a lot of public presence that’s also priority,” he said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS took a tour of the area with Gonzalez. We came across a handful of illegal dump sites. Gonzalez said one popped up overnight.

“We encounter a lot of individuals out here with the drug activity,” he said.

Gonzalez said because the area is so isolated, many people believe this is to be an area where they can do these illegal activities.

“If no one’s watching they’re gonna take the opportunity they can,” he said.

Metzger said seeing the constables in the area assures her that her remote community is being protected.
