Cameron County jails drop below capacity amid state compliance monitoring
The Cameron County Sheriff's Office remains out of compliance with state jail standards due to overcrowding at county jail facilities.
As of Friday, all county jails are below the state's capacity, but they will need to stay that way to return to compliance.
Channel 5 News first reported the county jails were found out of compliance in April after the jail system exceeded its capacity by 47 inmates.

Cameron County Sheriff Manny Treviño said since then he has been working with local judges and the county district attorney's office to move cases through the court system faster. He said one of the main issues is the state not picking up inmates to be transferred to other jails.
For now, the county must send its daily inmate population numbers to the state for continued monitoring.
"We started immediately taking a plan of action, so that in itself gave us a lot of credit with the state," Treviño said.
Channel 5 News also reached out to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards for comment and was told the county has already submitted its required plan of action.
The commission acknowledged the jails are currently under capacity but said the facilities will continue to be monitored.
After the monitoring period, the sheriff's office can request a re-inspection. If the county passes, it can receive a new certificate showing it is back in compliance. If not, the county could face additional inspections over the next year and may eventually be forced to reduce its inmate population.
