National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, Sept. 15.

With the November general election approaching, Cameron County elections officials are reminding residents to update their voter registration information.

Cameron County currently has about 238,000 registered voters.

Elections Administrator Remi Garza said officials hope to push that total past 240,000 before the election by offering registration assistance across the county.

Garza noted that while residents can find voter registration applications online, state law requires an original physical signature, meaning the entire process cannot be completed digitally.

Even if residents already registered, Garza said now is a good time to make sure the information on the registration is up to date.

"If they're new to the area, they need to submit a new application. But even if you've just moved within the county, you need to make sure you update your address so that you're voting for the right districts. If you've had a name change or anything like that, you might want to just make sure your records are up to date," Garza said.

During the March primary, more than 34,000 Democratic ballots were cast in Cameron County and more than 14,000 for the Republican party.

The deadline to register to vote for the November election is Oct. 5.

Garza said residents can still register after the deadline, but they won't be able to vote in the November election.
