LA JOYA – The Coyotes are cruising in district 30-6A. With an 8-0 record, La Joya’s softball team is on pace to clinch their first district title since 2010.

“We’ve been playing very well as a team,” said coach Carlos Rodriguez. “From offensively, up and down the lineup. We do a good job of putting the ball in play. Defensively we’re minimizing our mistakes and when it does happen, we’re able to overcome them.”

The Coyotes start a mix of veterans and younger players.

“The key is communication between each other,” said sophomore Leslie Ochoa. “Leadership takes part in every position. Everybody is standing up, picking each other up, and I think that’s really key. To have communication with the girls.”

In their most recent outing against Mission, a couple of seniors stepped up. Shortstop Monica Garcia launched three home runs in a 9-0 win over the Eagles.

In the circle, Sabrina Salinas threw a perfect game.

“I’ve thrown no-hitters and I’ve had good games, but I’ve never had a perfect game go through all seven innings,” said Salinas. “It was really something exciting for me.”

“I was in shock,” said Garcia. “I couldn’t believe it. When I went for my first homer, I was like that’s regular. When I went for my second, I was like okay even better. And the third one I was in disbelief.”
