Hidalgo County received nearly $152 million from the federal government for coronavirus-related expenses — money that must be spent by the end of the year.

Hidalgo County allocated most of the money to cities, which received $132 for every resident.

Cities must spend the money and submit their receipts to the county for review, approval and reimbursement.

Hidalgo County kept part of the money for coronavirus assistance programs.

"We've done everything we can to notify the public that this assistance is available to them," said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez.

Any money that isn't spent by the end of the year must be returned to the federal government.
