Dogs at a no kill animal shelter in the Valley are at risk of being euthanized over a lack of space.  

The Humane Society of Harlingen is about five animals over capacity, but that number fluctuates depending on if animal control drops off more they find from the streets or people come to pick up to adopt

The over capacity is pushing some dogs to be housed in crates.

"It breaks my heart because they're in there, and they need a place like a home," San Benito resident Priscila Hernandez said. 

The shelter has not had to euthanize in nearly three years. That may change, according to Luis Quintanilla, the shelter’s executive director.

“If we continue to get in an influx of animals every day without getting enough animals adopted, or into foster homes or out to rescue organizations, we will have to euthanize for space,” Quintanilla said.

This is the third time this year the shelter has been at risk of euthanizing animals, Quintanilla said.

The Humane Society of Harlingen were about to euthanize animals due to a lack of space in October, but the community stepped in to help by fostering and adopting animals.

The shelter is pushing for the same outcome by offering free adoptions and fosters.
