Fernando Morales is doing something no big brother wants to think about: planning a life without his younger brother.

Morales’ 16-year-old brother, Jacob Morales, was killed in a Friday night auto-pedestrian crash near Anderson and Val Verde roads near the city of Edinburg.

“We are truly heartbroken,” Morales said. “We can't get his smile, his laugh, out of our minds."

Morales’ family says Jacob was walking to a nearby Stripes convenience store to buy a beverage when he was struck by two vehicles.

“My mom heard the sirens, she decided to go because she had a feeling that it had something to do with my brother,” Morales recalled.

The Texas Department of Public Safety previously said Jacob was dressed in dark clothing in a poorly lit area when the crash occurred. Both of the drivers involved in the crash stopped at the scene and are not facing charges.

Morales says his brother had plans to attend welding school after high school to support his unborn son.

“You have a hard time accepting it,” Morales said. “He was so excited to bring life into this world and to be present, and just for this to happen to him is not fair."

Morales said he and his family are making a promise to Jacob.

“We're going to take care of his kid, and he doesn't have to worry about anything else in this world,” Morales said.

The family is currently making funeral plans for Jacob.

“He's passed on to God, he is going to be in a safe place,” Morales said. “He is never going to have to cry anymore. He is not going to feel pain."
