A 17-year-old student at Edcouch-Elsa High School created an Instagram account under another student's name to post fake threats about a school shooting, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 5 News.

Natasha Juliet Vargas was arrested and charged with terroristic threat and false alarm in connection with the March 30 incident.

According to the complaint, Vargas posted the threats to reconnect with a friend.

The lockdown at Edcouch-Elsa High School happened after a student showed police officers a photo of a gun he had received as part of a message from another student saying he was bringing a weapon to school.

Police officers searched the campus and previously detained one male student identified in the complaint as the person believed to have made the threat. He was later released after an investigation found the student was not involved in the incident.

The phone that made the threats was later linked to Vargas.

“Vargas admitted to creating a fictitious Instagram account under [the male student’s] name,” the complaint states. “Vargas explained that she fabricated the threats to create tension between her friends… in hopes of reestablishing her friendship [with one of her friends.]”

Vargas said she acted alone and had been “feeling depressed and unhappy, which contributed to her actions,” according to the complaint.

Hidalgo County jail records show Vargas remains in custody on an $11,500 bond.
