A free camp for children at risk of developing diabetes is coming to the Rio Grande Valley next month.

The Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association is hosting its energy camp on Sept. 26, 2026, in Mission. The camp is open to children ages 6 to 12.

Children will learn about healthy food choices. Attendees can also try canoeing, horseback riding, bicycling and indoor activities.

"These are easy things that are free that they can do at home. If we educate them and show them these things, give them these ideas, they can develop better habits. It can help them in the long run. It can help their parents and their family," RGV Diabetes Association Executive Assistant Nicole Armijo said.

Only 40 spots are available. Families can register by calling the RGV Diabetes Association at 956-318-1900.
