A Pharr mom is recovering after giving birth at home, with first responders helping deliver her baby girl in the back of an ambulance.

Pharr EMS Battalion Chief Cris Cisneros said the call came in around lunchtime on Aug. 19.

Cisneros said he usually responds to difficult situations, but this call was different.

"Normally, we respond to something bad happening every day," Cisneros said.

When crews arrived, the situation was clear.

"I heard the call come out of a lady who was having labor complications. We got there to the residence, and obviously she was having complications. She's saying the baby is coming," Cisneros said.

Cisneros and several other paramedics acted quickly.

"We knew right then and there that we're going to have to deliver the baby in the field. So we got her in the back of the ambulance, and got her ready with Chantel, our paramedic," Cisneros said.

Pharr Paramedic Chantel Weyrauch helped deliver the baby.

"I had the honor of guiding the baby out. The baby came out pink and crying and healthy, and those are all the signs we want to see in a newborn," Weyrauch said.

Mom and baby Aaliya Franchesca Salazar were taken to a hospital and are doing fine.

"I'm just glad everything went well, and you did an amazing job, mom," Weyrauch said.
