The Hidalgo County Courthouse will reopen to the public on Friday, Sept. 4, after county officials determined the building is safe to reopen following an assessment with engineers.

The building had been closed since a vehicle crashed into the entrance late Sunday night.

The driver, identified by the Edinburg Police Department as 49-year-old Jesus Alaniz Jr., has been hospitalized in critical condition following the crash, and police said he faces a DWI charge once he’s been medically cleared.

When asked if the closure had affected their caseload, Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio "Terry" Palacios said they were affected "a bit, but nothing we can't catch up on in the next few days."

The courthouse's main entrance will stay closed while repairs are underway. Temporary entrances have been set up for the public and county employees, according to a news release.

People can access the courthouse from N. Closner Boulevard or S. 12th Avenue and follow the walkway on the north side of the building to the temporary entrance on the west side.

The courthouse will return to regular hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Friday. Court operations and other county services inside the courthouse will also resume.

The Hidalgo County Clerk's Office will continue offering marriage license services at its temporary location at the Hidalgo County Clerk's Records Management Facility at 317 N. Closner Blvd. in Edinburg.

Residents can also use that location to drop off and pick up documents that need to be recorded.
