HIDALGO – The new school year just started, but the grades are already in, at least for the staff.

State education leaders are grading schools individually this year and it can have a districtwide effect.

The Texas Education Agency dropped Hidalgo Independent School District from an "A" grade down to a "B", but the district says they're appealing the score because it wasn't fairly calculated.

"That score does not reflect the true picture of Hidalgo ISD," says Superintendent Xavier Salinas.

Salinas says Hidalgo ISD actually scored a 91, which should be an "A".

However, because of a line in the law when it comes to calculating ratings, the TEA automatically drops them down to an 89.

Which is because of the school: Hidalgo Academy.

On average, the Hidalgo Academy only has about 19 students.

Some of the most at risk youth in the district; students who need a little extra help.

Since the school population is so low, every test score is worth more.

On the TEA website, instead of being graded under three separate categories, Hidalgo Academy is only evaluated on one: student achievement.

You can look up your school's report card on the TEA website, where you can search for your district or a specific school.
