ELSA – The remains found inside a septic tank near Elsa are believed to be of a woman, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators with the sheriff’s department and Hidalgo County Precinct 1 responded to a home on Mile 4 W Road and Dallas Street Wednesday night. That’s north of Monte Cristo Road.

Deputies responded to a call about suspicious circumstances. The occupant of the home said he first discovered a bone in the septic tank.

Crews with Precinct 1 brought in a backhoe to dig up the area and a crime scene investigator retrieved the femur.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said a forensic pathologist confirmed they were human remains.

"We're sifting through that raw sewage and we have recovered, so far, various ribs. We've got the skull. The skull does have the teeth intact," he said. "We're at that process right now. Obviously, it's going to take a while."

Guerra said analysts are comparing the evidence to missing persons reports. They will be also do a DNA test to identify the body. Investigators will also be checking in with septic companies and look at their logs.

The investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff added more sifting will be done on Friday.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office at 956-383-8114 or Crime Stoppers at 956-668-8477.
