Made in the 956: Valley nonprofit works to help families year-round
A local nonprofit is working to help families in need during the holidays and throughout the year.
RGV's Little Elves works with school districts across the Rio Grande Valley to identify students who need support.
"RGV's Little Elves serves families in need throughout the year and we started in 2019 to teach my daughter to give back to the community," RGV's Little Elves President and Founder Sarah Gutierrez said. "RGV's Little Elves doesn't just support during the Christmas time, it's all year long, but during the Christmas time we see that students might not have clothing to stay warm, food hygiene items, you know household necessities."
Now, the nonprofit has nine board members who are all volunteers. Donations help the group put together Thanksgiving meal kits, Christmas blessings and bikes in the summer.
"So we have grown since day one already, I never expected for it to be this big, the way it is now," Gutierrez said. "I want to teach people to give back, I was actually supported by a nonprofit like this when I was a kid and it kind of gave me the idea to support families in need as well and I believe people don't think it'll happen to them until it happens to them."
Gutierrez hopes the organization will continue to grow and help families.
