A 71-year-old Pharr man received a five-year probation sentence on Monday after pleading guilty to running a red light and causing a crash that killed a 92-year-old woman, according to Hidalgo County court records.

Javier Garza pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal negligent homicide in connection with the crash that happened on Feb. 2, 2025.

As part of a plea deal, Garza had additional charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury dismissed, court records show.

Dolores Acevedo was pronounced dead following the crash on 23rd Street north of Dicker Road. She was the passenger of a vehicle, and the driver was hospitalized in serious condition following the crash.

The indictment against Garza says he was the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash. Garza was speeding and failed to stop at a red light when the crash occurred, the indictment states.

Garza was also hospitalized following the crash.

Court records show Garza must also complete 120 hours of community service. He’s also receiving eight days of jail credit for time served.
