MISSION – An investigation into a body found in Mission is underway.

Mission police and fire crews responded to the scene Wednesday morning near the 1800 block of River Bend Drive.

Lt. Jody Tittle with the Mission Police Department tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the body of a male was found in the Mission main canal around 8 a.m. floating feet away from homes.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death has been ordered.

Officials say the neighborhood is in a high-traffic spot for people crossing the river illegally.

Despite some concerns from nearby residents, the Mission police chief says those crossing illegally have a very low percentage of committing any crimes.

He believes state grants used to employ additional officers to patrol the area will continue to keep the residents safe.
