The city of Pharr has launched a new program to help residents prepare for house fires.

The Safer at Home program started in May. It focuses on elderly residents and anyone with a disability, whether a child or an adult.

Pharr firefighters visit homes, offer smoke detectors and give fire safety tips. The city's public health department and the nonprofit Valley Association for Independent Living — or VAIL — are also part of the effort.

"We'll invite the community, the Pharr residents, to call us, to let us know if they have any needs,” Pharr Public Health Department Coordinator Lisa Morales said. “Safer Home is here, and we're free. We're willing to help.”

Residents can register by calling the fire or public health department or by scanning the QR code on the program flyer.
