Brownsville's Space Fest is getting bigger this year, with city leaders expanding the event and expecting thousands of attendees.

For the first time, students will compete in a robot competition at Linear Park. They can bring their own robot or build one at the event, then test it through a series of challenges.

That's one of several new STEM components being added this year. Brownsville Director of Convention and Visitors Bureau and Space Commerce Nathan Burkhart said several of the newer components also serve as qualifiers for bigger competitions.

"We want to inspire the next generation with potential employers, both K through 12th grade students, so you can get inspired in Space Fest, see what the possibilities and opportunities are, so they can stay home," Burkhart said.

Organizers said the goal is to expose locals to the types of careers growing in the Rio Grande Valley.

Organizers are also already looking at what could be new next year, including a possible experimental rocket competition.
