Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest executive order bans any entity in the state from issuing vaccine mandates, spurring reactions from the White House and political experts.

The order comes the month after President Biden issued a series of executive orders requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for millions of Americans, including federal and healthcare workers.

Contractors that do business with the federal government are also included, and all employers with 100 plus employees are required to ensure their workers are vaccinated or tested weekly under Biden’s order.

Clyde W. Barrow, professor and chair of the UTRGV department of political science, said that Abbott’s order won't overrule President Biden's executive order. Most businesses will have to comply with the federal government in order to keep doing business across state lines.

"The governor has really sort of issued a decree that has no force behind it,” Barrow said.
