Weslaco, TX (KRGV) — Gov. Greg Abbott and State Rep. Gina Hinojosa brought their campaigns to the Rio Grande Valley and told Channel 5 News how they would handle property taxes, jobs and Operation Lone Star.

Channel 5 News sat down with Hinojosa last month and asked Abbott the same questions during his Tuesday visit to Harlingen.

Channel 5 News asked both candidates about property taxes and homeownership.

"My cost of living will reduce property taxes by $3,000. It's going to reduce the cost of healthcare insurance by $1,000 per family," Abbott said. “My property tax plan does more than just provide property tax cuts for seniors; it provides it for first-time home buyers. So if you're taking out a loan to buy a house, you're also going to pay property taxes. Under my law, property taxes will go down, making it more affordable for a new homeowner to buy a home.”

Hinojosa said young people don't believe they will ever be able to afford their own home.

“Our property taxes are skyrocketing, and we pay more, and we have nothing to show for it,” Hinojosa said. “So much of that money is going to vendor contracts. My plan is this: we wipe clean all those corrupt vendor contracts, do an audit, and clean government.”

Channel 5 News also asked both candidates about Elon Musk and job creation.

"Greg Abbott gave Elon Musk the keys to the castle. We can be pro-business, but I think it's important to differentiate between making sure we are supporting the business community and our Texas communities, but also making sure they're not taking advantage of us," Hinojosa said.

Abbott has welcomed Musk and his companies to Texas, including SpaceX in Cameron County.

"When you look at all the new jobs, not just added by Elon Musk, but look at the new jobs added by all of these employers that are coming; those are high-paying jobs,” Abbott said. “A lot of people are earning more than $100,000 a year with these jobs, especially in regard to SpaceX. Look at the new Saronic shipbuilding facility we brought into Cameron County."

Channel 5 News also asked about Operation Lone Star, an $11 billion border security project with a big presence in the area.

"As we are talking right now, there's a caravan making its way through Mexico, and their target is likely Texas," Abbott said. “We have to have a governor that's gonna put a stop to it. I've proven I can do that. My opponent, Gina, is an open border policy person, and she thought Joe Biden's policies were just fine. They were wrong for America. They're wrong for Texas. I will stand strong for a secure border for Texas.”

Hinojosa said Operation Lone Star needs to be reviewed.

"Operation Lone Star needs to only exist to make us safer. What has happened is we've spent billions of dollars in this state, billions of dollars to detain immigrants, to police for immigrants. That was not a plan to keep us safe; we need a review of Operation Lone Star," Hinojosa said.

Early voting ends on Oct. 30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
