Port Isabel, TX (KRGV) — Port Isabel Early College High School senior Grayson Estes shines in the classroom and under the Friday Night Lights.

This past Friday, Estes threw the winning touchdown pass for the Tarpons.

"I just want to thank my family, and I just want to thank God and all the staff that have allowed me to reach this point," Estes said.

The Estes family moved to Port Isabel in 2007, and Grayson was born just weeks after Hurricane Dolly tore across the area. The family planted its roots in the community after the storm.

“A lot of the students here, a lot of the staff, and my friends and teammates — we all have a type of bond that is very unique to everywhere else," Estes said. “I'm just very grateful to be a part of it.”

For the last two years, Estes has been part of the coastal monitoring program, which provides researchers and state managers with vital on-the-ground data.

He also volunteers at the Catholic Church bazaar, fishing tournaments, and local festivals. He is the student council vice president, senior class president, and NHS president.

Estes plays basketball, baseball, and football for the Tarpons. His coaches say he is a great team player and a great leader.

Estes has gone to football camps where he met Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Arch Manning. He also made a memory on the field when he found his younger brother Preston for a Tarpon touchdown.

"He's always been super dedicated to anything he's wanted to do," Estes’ dad — Robert — said. “Even when he doesn’t come out on top, he learned a lot in the process. I think that's helped make him who he is.”

Estes is also the salutatorian of his class, and he wants to study business at UT-Austin after high school.

This fall, Channel 5 News will be highlighting 10 students who shine in and out of the classroom.

The students have already been selected.
