Rising gas prices are forcing a Rio Grande Valley nonprofit to cut back on weekly events for seniors.

Amigos del Valle offers weekly events for elderly community members and provides rides for those who need transportation. But with gas prices climbing, the organization is scaling back the number of pickups it offers.

"Now with how crazy the gas prices are, we toned down the events we do," Amigos del Valle Transportation Director Emanuel Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the number of weekly pickups has dropped significantly.

"Before it was maybe three or four times a week; now it's about once or twice," Rodriguez said.

Mission resident Ramona Treviño has attended the group's dance classes for the past two years. She said the classes give her a chance to spend time with others.

"We come here with excitement and a mentality to go out and not be bored staying at home. We want to go out. Dance is most important for us," Treviño said. "This is going to affect us because that's how we have fun, and it is important for us."

AAA Texas data shows the average price of unleaded gas in the Rio Grande Valley is $4.16 a gallon as of Thursday. That is higher than the state average of $3.95 per gallon.

"That price is 23 cents higher than it was just a week ago. It's 48 cents higher than it was a month ago, and it's $1.43 per gallon higher than it was this time last year," AAA Texas Corporate Communications Manager Doug Shupe said.

Shupe said the conflict in the Middle East is what continues to drive up gas prices.

"We are also seeing reduced output from the Middle East, which is putting a constraint on the global supply of product, and until we see some type of resolution with the Middle East, we will likely continue to see the crude oil prices remain high," Shupe said.

Shupe said as long as crude oil prices stay high, that pressure will continue at the pumps.

Treviño said the cutbacks have left seniors feeling the impact.

"We get sad because when there is no dance class. We want to go, but we can't," Treviño said.
