SAN BENITO – Two candidates who didn’t get enough votes to become San Benito CISD trustees will be getting the recount they requested.

The votes for San Benito CISD Trustee for Place 5 and Place 7 are set to be tallied a second time on Saturday, according to Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza.

Both candidates filed their requests with the Cameron County Elections Office earlier this month.

San Benito CISD Trustee Candidate for Place 5 Mario Silva finished the night with one fewer vote than Mary Lou Garcia. He finished with 1,283 votes while Garcia took home 1,284 votes.

Meanwhile, candidate for Place 7, Joe D. Gonzalez, finished eight votes behind Angel Mendez. Gonzalez captured 1,281 votes while Mendez finished with 1,289 votes.

All of the votes are still unofficial. They have not yet been canvassed.

Still, both Garcia and Mendez were sworn in to their trustee positions earlier this week.

Saturday’s recount for the positions will happen at the Cameron County Courthouse at 10 a.m.
