Driver in custody after Mercedes police chase ends on the expressway
Mercedes, TX (KRGV) — A driver is in custody after leading police on a chase that ended on the expressway in Donna, according to Mercedes Police Chief Frank Sanchez.
Investigators later learned the driver had also refused to stop for ICE personnel before the chase began, Sanchez added.
According to Sanchez, the chase began when a Mercedes police officer spotted a white van driving recklessly on South Rio Rico Road at around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
“The officer observed the van disregard a red traffic light and at one point almost cause an accident,” Sanchez said in a statement. “Mercedes Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle as it was then driving recklessly through the school zone; however, the driver failed to stop, resulting in a vehicle pursuit.”
The chase moved from Mercedes toward the expressway, where a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper stopped the van on the expressway.
The unidentified driver will be arraigned on Thursday and faces a charge of evading arrest, Sanchez said.
