Taxes, drainage, and county growth top priorities in Cameron County judge race
Cameron County, TX (KRGV) — Cameron County voters are choosing between Republican Mauro Garza and Democrat Steve Guerra for their next county judge after outgoing judge Eddie Treviño lost the Democratic primary.
Garza began his career with the Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. He later spent more than a decade in higher education before starting his own company, where he was CEO for nearly 22 years.
"You have to be very familiar with budgets. You have to have experience in contract negotiation," Garza said.
If elected, Garza says he wants to focus on upgrading infrastructure and future growth in the county without burdening taxpayers. He plans to look for existing state and federal grants to pay for upgrades.
"I think we need to go after the money that you and I have already paid taxes on," Garza said.
Garza also wants to work with county, state, and federal agencies to reach those goals.
"You need all the institutional knowledge that we have there, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the drainage district, the water district, and all the leaders have got to have a stake in it," Garza said.
Guerra beat Eddie Treviño Jr. in the Democratic primary runoff election in May. He is an entrepreneur with a background in trucking, market consulting, restaurant and hotel ownership, and real estate in the U.S. and Mexico.
He has also served as chairman of Brownsville's navigation board.
"We brought over $41 billion in projects. Now, we're going to come out and do that for all of Cameron County," Guerra said.
If elected, Guerra says he will start by addressing everyday issues that can relieve economic stress for people in Cameron County.
"It's a fact that we're hurting down here in South Texas; I'm going to look for ways to alleviate our pocketbooks," Guerra said. "I'm going to look for ways to lower your taxes. The people of Cameron County deserve a tax break, and I'm going to make sure that happens."
Guerra also says he will focus on infrastructure needs like water, electricity, and drainage issues across the county.
"I am proudly the Democratic nominee, but I'm going to be working for all Democrats, Republicans, and Independents," Guerra said.
Cameron County residents can vote at any available polling location for the general and special elections.
Early voting ends on Oct. 30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
