Texas appeals court upholds Victor Godinez death sentence in slaying of DPS trooper
Hidalgo County, TX (KRGV) — The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Victor Godinez's conviction and death sentence in the killing of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.
Godinez's lawyers argued Trooper Moises Sanchez died from complications during medical treatment and not from the shooting.

The court rejected that argument and the other three issues in the appeal, saying the evidence showed the gunshot wounds led to Sanchez's death.
A jury convicted Godinez in January 2024 of killing Sanchez after Godinez shot him in April 2019. Sanchez died four months later in Houston while recovering from his injuries.
Godinez was also found guilty on two counts of trying to kill a peace officer. State District Judge Letty Lopez sentenced him to life in prison on those charges.
