LOS FRESNOS – Traffic tickets are going out in Cameron County cities to deter drivers from beating the train.

Union Pacific Railroad coordinated the enforcement effort Tuesday in the vicinity of Los Fresnos.

The railroad company ran a locomotive through several intersections. Local police officers were also present to ticket drivers who don’t stop according to the law.

"An operator approaching a railroad grade crossing shall stop not closer than 15 feet or farther than 50 feet from the nearest rail," reads the statute.

According to Texas Transportation Code 545.25, drivers must stop if warning lights are blinking, a crossing gate is lowered or if a train sounds a horn within 1500 feet of the intersection.

"They don't realize the danger they're putting themselves in," said special agent Alfredo Rodriguez with the Union Pacific Railroad Police Department.

Rodriguez said fines range from $50 to $200.

He said enforcement efforts will continue Wednesday morning in Harlingen.
