Valley family receiving new home thanks to Buckner International
A family north of Mission is a step closer to getting a new mortgage free home thanks to the efforts of a Rio Grande Valley non-profit, and a church in Austin.
The Avalos family was chosen by Buckner International to receive the new home. The non-profit builds homes for families along the border.
Buckner delivered the frame of the Avalos’ new home to their property on Wednesday. The frame was constructed in the parking lot of the McAllen Convention Center thanks to 1,900 volunteers attending the Texas Baptists Family Gathering. The convention attendees were led in the build by Buckner and Westoak Woods Baptist Church in Austin.
Gabe Flores, director of the Mission Buckner International location, said before a family is selected, they must learn how to become homeowners by taking classes on homeownership and healthy family dynamics from Buckner.
“We're learning how to be better parents… they've helped us so much with having better communication and being able to move our family forward,” Sandra Avalos said. “It's going to help us so much. It's a huge change because we were living in a trailer and now today we're building a real home."
