EDINBURG – UTRGV Deputy Director of Athletics Vince Volpe showed Channel 5 Sports the work in progress at the Fieldhouse Tuesday afternoon.

“Really improving the functionality and the benefit for both men’s and women’s basketball programs,” said Volpe. “But not only basketball. Really all 275 of our student athletes.”

The school has pumped about half a million dollars into the project. Among the upgrades, a new training room that’s much bigger than the old one.

Athletes from all 16 sports will be able to receive treatment in the new room.

“We’re happy that after basketball season ended, that project started right away, within three to four weeks really,” said Volpe.

Other upgrades include a new sound system and brighter LED lighting for the gym, an equipment room, a media press conference room, and a new concession stand area.

It’s another way the school can show athletes they’re investing in them.

“Not only our current student athletes, but recruited student athletes from all over the Valley, all over Texas, all over the country,” said Volpe. “We’re able to show all of our sports improvement and progress. I think this is one more step in reaching that goal.”

Volpe says the work should be completed by early August, just in time for the fall semester.
