Cameron Co. Elderly Man Wants Electricity Reconnected

HARLINGEN – An elderly man waited eight hot days without power to get his electricity reconnected.
Harlingen resident Jesus Cardenas said his electric utility company caused him and his wife unnecessary stress.
The 95-year-old recently paid $900 to replace his electric meter. He said American Electric Power hadn't reconnected his home’s electricity since the repairs.
“I’ve been calling from Tuesday, calling and calling every day. I’ve called and spoke to the electricity and the electricity, they said they will go this afternoon,” he said. “I waited another day, and I call again and they don’t come.”
Cardenas said Cameron County inspectors approved the meter last Wednesday. But AEP had still not reconnected his power by Monday.
He said he’s had problems with his knee for several years now.
“I have to walk inside the room with a flash light. To walk to the restroom or to walk to the fence, you know, everything is dark inside,” he said.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS called AEP to find out what caused the hold up. The company said they didn’t receive the approved permit from Cameron County until Friday afternoon.
They apologized for not fixing the electricity that day. However, they assured us Cardenas would have electricity by the end of the day.
We went back to Cardenas’ home and found the company had kept their word and reconnected power to his home.
