Driver in deadly crash north of Alton charged with intoxication manslaughter

A Mission man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with a deadly crash north of Alton over the weekend.

Walter Enrique Martinez, 42, of Mission has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The two-vehicle crash happened early Saturday morning on Moorefield Road, south of FM 681, north of Alton.

Preliminary investigation reveals a gray Mazda was traveling northbound on Moorefield Road when it collided with a blue GMC Sierra traveling southbound.

A passenger in the Mazda, identified as 65-year-old Ernesto Gomez Sanchez, died at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the GMC Sierra were taken to a local hospital and have since been released.

Martinez, identified as the driver of the Mazda, was released from a local hospital and taken to Hidalgo County jail, where he remained as of Tuesday morning.

Martinez’s bond was set at $910,000, according to jail records.

DPS continues to investigate the crash.
