LA FERIA – A local fire chief says his department is in need of volunteers.
La Feria Fire Chief David Phinney tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS he inherited a department that was understaffed and underfunded.
“We had a stretch that was real bad where we had other cities having to cover our calls because we didn’t have anyone available at that time,” says Phinney.
He explains the department recently received a federal grant which will also allow them to hire firefighters. A grant of $388,000 will allow about four firefighters to be hired.
The department will begin accepting applications for the paid positions on Oct. 1. Those interested in volunteering can visit the city of La Feria’s website for more information.
