McAllen Respite Center Moved due to Increase in Asylum Seekers

MCALLEN – For the past four years, downtown McAllen has been the gathering point for hundreds of people who cross the border illegally.
Sister Norma Pimentel says because so many needed help at the Catholic Charities Respite Center, they had to move.
She explains the respite center has been taking in anywhere from 100 to 400 people daily since 2014.
The new location is at a former nursing home building located at 209 W. Hackberry Avenue in McAllen.
"The problem is not here at the border of the United States with Mexico, the problem is back home where they are forced to leave their country because of the violence and the difficulty they have for their children to be there,” says Pimentel.
Pimentel says there are plans in motion for a new permanent respite center to be built in downtown McAllen.
