One Rio Grande Valley neighborhood is setting an example for community pride. They received the McAllen Shines first-ever championship winner award.

For those who live in the Windfern neighborhood, keeping things clean isn't a chore, it's a shared commitment.

"You know, we do try to get as much as involved we can, you know, in keeping our neighborhood clean. Nothing in the property, you know their cars, the trash, everything," resident Yolanda Molina said.

Molina has lived in the Windfern neighborhood near Colonel Rowe Boulevard and Fern Street for seven years. The Homeowner Association was honored by McAllen Shines for their dedication to keeping the community clean.

"They manicured the entrance, they redid the entrance with more greenery, and they did a fantastic job," McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said.

McAllen Shines is a city wide initiative that started two years ago. It encourages everyone to keep the community clean.

Molina said it says she and her neighbors are leading by example.

"Everybody keeping up with their lawn, their property, the cars, there's no more cars in on top of the property, there's no nothing on the streets, like trash, trees, no dumping even for our backyard," Molina said.

That unity is something the Windfern Homeowners Association works hard to keep alive.

"So, about two to three times a year, we'll send, we hand-deliver pamphlets to everybody in the community," Windfern Homeowners Association President Eugene Desutter said.

From planting trees to helping each other out, the people who live here want everyone to see what's possible when neighbors care, not because they have to, but because they want to.

"It is voluntary. Everything is voluntary because as a community we stick to each other and watch each other as the backs. That's why we do," Molina said.

The award doesn't come with money or fame, but it comes with a plaque that echoes the message of the community.

Windfern may be the first McAllen Shines community champion, but the city hopes it won't be the last.
