A new state vaccine study shows that unvaccinated people are 20 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than those fully vaccinated.

McAllen resident Sarah Garza lost her husband, Oswaldo Garza, to the virus last year, before the vaccine was available.

"The holidays, the anniversaries, Christmas," Garza said. "He is never going to be there."

Her husband was waiting for a new treatment for the coronavirus to be available in the Valley, but his fight against the virus ended on the day he was scheduled to be transferred to another medical facility.

Shortly after losing her husband, Garza says she lost her most significant support system, her mother.

"She ended up also passing from COVID," Garza said. "A month after my husband."

Garza says she wishes the vaccine was around for her loved ones as experts continue advocating for the shot.
