The mother of a U.S. Navy sailor from Brownsville said she has more questions following a hearing for her daughter’s accused killer.

The body of Angelina Resendiz was found outside the naval base she was stationed at in Norfolk, Virginia on June 9 after she had been missing for nearly two weeks.

A spokesperson with the Virginia Department of Health told Channel 5 News that Resendiz’s cause of death is undetermined because “despite doing an examination, a specific cause of death could not be determined.”

Resendiz’s mother — Esmeralda Castle — said there are discrepancies from the Navy about the last time anyone spoke to her daughter.

According to Castle, what the Navy said during a military hearing on Sept. 18 doesn't match what the Navy told Congress about what happened to her daughter.

A military attorney said Resendiz went to the barracks of the suspect — Jemiah Copeland— on May 28.

Hours later, Resendiz’s friends received text messages and a phone call from her. The friends reported that Resendiz seemed distressed and asked them to pick her up.

Her friends said they went to find her but couldn't.

Castle said the statements don’t match what the secretary of the Navy wrote in a letter to Congress.

“A piece of paper from the secretary of the Navy says Angie called a friend because she's locked out of her barracks, things like that,” Castle said. “There is a complete disconnect. It's either someone’s not being truthful to the higher ups, or you have the military, the Navy in this situation, not being truthful to Congress."

Cell phone data reportedly shows that Copeland searched for a wooded area and stayed there for about 15 minutes before going back to his car

Authorities said it’s the same area where Resendiz's body was found.

Copeland is in pre-trial confinement on multiple charges, including murder, sexual assault and aggravated assault.
