Veteran, PTSD Group Asking to Resume Meetings Held at VA Clinic
MCALLEN – A Rio Grande Valley veteran wants to get his support group moved back into a VA clinic.
Veteran Wally Costenko says for around 40 years after his service, he dealt with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.
After getting help from the VA, he decided to join an informal and unnamed PTSD support group and attended meetings at the VA clinic in McAllen.
Costenko says management at the clinic later informed them they wouldn’t be able to use the conference room at its facility.
KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey reached out to the VA to see if they could be allowed back.
Rey Leal, spokesperson for the agency, sent us the following statement which reads in part:
“Only VA-sanctioned groups are allowed to meet on VA campuses for evidence-based mental health treatment. The group in question has no official affiliation with VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, that is why we asked them to move to a non-VA site.”
