A bond originally set at $1 million for a 22-year-old Donna woman who allegedly confessed to shooting and killing her boyfriend was lowered to $50,000 on Monday, Hidalgo County court records show.

Miriam Valdez was originally charged with manslaughter in the May 18, 2025, death of 20-year-old Damian Bazan.

According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Valdez admitted to firing a handgun at her boyfriend, whose body was found inside a vehicle on the 13000 block of Hermosa Vida Drive in rural Donna.

Bazan had a gunshot wound to the head, and Valdez told investigators she fired what she believed was an unloaded gun in Bazan's direction, the sheriff’s office stated.

The indictment against Valdez said she “recklessly” caused Bazan’s death “with intent to cause serious bodily injury.”

Hidalgo County court records show that Valdez was also charged with murder following her arraignment, and that her bond was initially lowered to $250,000 for the manslaughter charge and $50,000 for the murder charge on May 30, 2025.

A second motion to reduce Valdez’s bond was filed on Aug. 12, 2026, asking for a total bond of $30,000 because the previous bond amount was “oppressively high.”

“The defendant has attempted through family to post bond in said amounts but has been unsuccessful in raising the funds necessary to post cash bonds or pay the professional bondsman premiums required for surety bonds in said amounts,” the order stated.

The bond was reduced to $25,000 on each of the charges.

Hidalgo County jail records show Valdez remains in custody as of Monday night.
