The Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation is cutting funding to its quality of life program and changing how it splits costs for local projects.

Previously, the organization fully covered costs for projects. Now it is moving to an 80-20 match, meaning applicants will have to cover 20% of project costs.

The available budget is also dropping from about $1 million to around $600,000.

"Per our board of directors, we do set a budget every single year for these kinds of projects," BCIC Director of Community Development Eric Quintero said. "So it really just depends on what the ask is and the match from the partner, where we can evaluate what makes the most reasonable sense in terms of financial implications. That way we have the best community impact as well."

The program is open to nonprofits and businesses, where nearly $1.17 million in grants remain in place for other organizations already approved.
