A mother and her three children were able to escape a Sunday fire that destroyed their mobile home.

Tears ran down Mariana Ortiz's face as she watched her mobile home located in the 9400 block of Nueces Circle in Donna get swallowed by orange flames and black smoke.

“The flames were too strong — and I was just able to get my kids out. I give thanks to God that he allowed me to get my kids out,” Ortiz said.

Nails, a metal frame and concrete stairs are the only things left standing of the place Ortiz and her family called home for the last 10 years. She said it was a sight that pains her.

“It makes me sad because that was my children's inheritance,” Ortiz said. “The material things come and go, those are all material things that are not important. What is important are the lives of my children."

In the middle of all the loss, Ortiz’s neighbors stepped in to help with bags of clothes, water, and food.

“I am grateful to them and I thank God that he touched their hearts and they have come to support me,” Ortiz said.

The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal's Office said the cause of the fire is being ruled as undetermined due to the severity of the damage.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help the family.

A GoFundMe was also set up to help the Ortiz family. Click here to donate.
