A fire forced a Donna mechanic shop to temporarily close, leaving the owner and his employees without work.

The fire broke out Friday at Vega's Auto Shop on Ponciano Drive off FM 493. It damaged the shop's warehouse, where owner Jesus Vega stored repair materials including motors, cylinder heads, and tires.

Vega had left the shop to deliver parts to a customer. When he returned, he found his shop on fire.

"The fire started right here on this corner, and this was a little warehouse where I had my cylinder heads and my tires from Goodwill. All of it went out," Vega said.

Several workers were inside at the time, but no one was injured.

Vega spent the day after the fire looking over the damage and clearing out debris. He opened the shop 10 years ago after working in auto parts since he was a teenager.

"I had a dream before I had been working in the auto parts for so many years, since I was 18 years old, and I had a dream that I would own my own shop and business," Vega said.

The fire wiped out his inventory of used motors and other materials.

"They were used motors, but they were good sales for motors. Now I don't have any," Vega said.

The shop remains closed until it is safe to restore electricity. Vega's employees are also out of work meanwhile.

"One thing is that everybody works for a reason, and when there is no job, there is no food on the table, so really they need the job back," Vega said.

Vega said he does not have insurance but hopes to find a way to rebuild. He also said the fire has pushed him to make safety a bigger priority going forward.

"Sometimes we believe that we did something right and our thing went wrong. I don't know. We learned that we have to take more care of our things and be safer," Vega said.

The Donna Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
