Crews have started repaving Anderson Road north of Donna, a project that required two Hidalgo County precincts to team up and split the cost.

The road runs along the boundary of Hidalgo County Precinct 1 and Precinct 4, with Precinct 4 covering the northern half and Precinct 1 covering the southern half. Both precincts contributed equally to fund the work.

The project costs $250,000, with each precinct pulling from its road and bridge fund to cover half.

"The biggest challenge for any entity is funding," Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Project Manager Rolando Lozano said.

Crews started the first phase of repaving Anderson Road from Val Verde Road to FM 493. Lozano said the process took about six months of preparation before work could begin.

"It is a major corridor for a lot of the commuting that is taking place," Lozano said.

Lozano believes Anderson Road is heavily used by drivers looking to bypass FM 107, a major corridor in the northern mid-valley.

Hidalgo County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres said residents reached out about the road's condition before the project got underway.

"We did have some residents that did call to address the road," Torres said.

The project also includes expanding a drainage ditch crossing and adding shoulders to improve safety.

"It'll be a safer road for the commuters, for our school buses," Torres said.

Lozano said the work benefits everyone in the county regardless of which precinct holds the funding.

"Because at the end of the day they're still our constituents; we're still public servants for all of Hidalgo County," Lozano said.

Both phases of the project are expected to take about two weeks each to complete.
