McAllen, TX (KRGV) — Gov. Greg Abbott visited McAllen on Monday to discuss the cost of living and his plan to help Texas families save money.

Abbott met with workers at the STI Group Warehouse in McAllen, a manufacturing company. He told them he wants to focus on reducing property taxes and health care reform.

"I have the best strategy to ensure that we're going to slash your property taxes in Texas," Abbott said. "We also want to reduce the cost of health care items that are essential to stay alive," Abbott said.

Abbott said those items include insulin and inhalers. He said he wants both capped at no more than $25 a month.

"I want Texas to rank number one as the most affordable state in the United States. Some studies show that Texas ranks number four. Another study shows that Texas ranks number 15. Whichever it is, is not number one. We are not satisfied unless we're number one," Abbott said.

In response to Abbott’s visit, Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long issued the following statement in full:

“Career politician Greg Abbott has been in public office for 30 years. Everything he’s promising voters are things he could’ve done already. If he were serious about making Texas more affordable, he’d have a plan to address record-high prices brought on by Donald Trump’s tariffs and war with Iran. All Greg Abbott offers is more tax giveaways for billionaire campaign donors while manufacturers, small businesses, and working families foot the bill. Texas deserves a governor like Gina Hinojosa who will fight to put more money in their pocket – not one who rigs the system for the people at the top.”

Abbott is up for re-election and is running against Rep. Gina Hinojosa.
