Jose Lopez repairs septic tanks and says with all recent rainfall he's been called several times to remove standing floodwater.

Lopez says in all his time working he's rarely seen mosquitos like this.

"It's real bad, people can't even come out of their homes sometimes,” Lopez said. “The mosquitos are just so bad, we just came from a house on 107 and Mission and we almost ran out of there and had to ask for blood or something."

UTRGV professor Dr. Christopher Vitek tracks mosquitoes in the Valley and says the early rainfall has made the area ripe for more.

"We've probably seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-100 percent of an increase of mosquitos we've collected,” Dr. Vitek said.

Noel Barrera, health director for the city of Mission, said they've seen this before and they're working to keep it under control.

"At this point in time what we do is, we address all the complaints and then we go and spray in the middle of the night,” Barrera said. “We've done city parks, we've done bike trails, a whole bunch of areas that have concerns."

It’s recommended that if you go outside make sure you use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active.
