La Grulla, TX (KRGV) — La Grulla Mayor Macario Villarreal apologized Wednesday night after water interruptions left many residents without water over the weekend.

City leaders held a commissioners' meeting Wednesday night where the water problem was discussed.

"On behalf of the city of La Grulla, I apologize to the residents and businesses affected by the water interruptions that began on Friday, October 2nd,” Villarreal said.

The city's third-party water plant operator told Channel 5 News a fitting from a line that feeds water to customers broke off and caused the interruptions.

"It's just an old fitting. It's an old cast iron fitting that probably just rusted away," La Grulla water plant operations contractor Javier Ramirez said.

The mayor explained it was difficult to find a replacement piece over the weekend.

“Should we expect this to happen again? Hopefully not. It’s over 35 years old. We can’t say when it’s going to happen and when it’s not going to happen,” Villarreal said.

A boil water notice issued Saturday because of a drop in pressure remains in effect. Villarreal promised more continuous updates if another water service issue happens again.
