City leaders in Mercedes broke ground Thursday on phase three of the South Mercedes Lateral Improvement project.

The $1 million project will improve stormwater movement, boost drainage capacity and reduce flooding for homes and businesses in the area.

Construction kicks off Aug. 17, with completion expected in four months.

The Texas General Land Office is funding the project.
