Mexican Consulate office in Brownsville reports increase in dual citizenship applications
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — More than 1,700 people have applied for dual Mexican citizenship through the Mexican consulate in Brownsville since April 2026, according to the consulate.
Officials said the consulate does not ask applicants why they are seeking Mexican citizenship but they say it can offer several benefits.
“People might apply for dual Mexican citizenship to make traveling to Mexico easier, take control of property in Mexico or simply feel patriotic,” Deputy Consul Jose Luis Diaz Miron Hinojosa said.
Applicants must show proof that one of their parents is a Mexican citizen. Once registered, they can vote in Mexico, get a Mexican passport and pass that nationality to their children.
